Mabel Mehaffey

Waynesville, Mabel Louise Downs Mehaffey, age 84, of Pink Dogwood Lane, went to be with the Lord on Friday, July 15, 2016 at Autumn Care of Waynesville. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late Woodrow and Lura Ray Downs. She was also preceded in death by her loving husband of 65 years, Clyde Hampton Mehaffey who died in 2012; one daughter, Tracy Selena Mehaffey; one son, Billy Wayne Mehaffey; two granddaughters, Maria and Crystal Mehaffey; one sister, Frances Downs Clark; and two brothers, Jim and Raymond Downs. Mabel was a member of the Free Methodist Church of Waynesville. She loved life and her family and enjoyed sewing, reading and studying her religion. Mabel is survived by her daughter, Delia "Dee" Sluder, and her husband, Dean, of Arden; two sons, Dewey Mehaffey, of Bethel, and Steve Mehaffey, and his wife, Brenda, of Waynesville; daughter-in-law, Debbie Mehaffey; fourteen grandchildren; twenty-seven great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 17, 2016 in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Brenda Mehaffey officiating. Burial will follow at Ratcliffe Cove Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:00 p.m. prior at the funeral home. Memorial may be made to Ratcliffe Cove Cemetery Fund, 75 Keller Street, Waynesville, NC 28786.
