A Life of Everlasting Love Well Lived

October 18, 1933 – October 18, 2024

CLYDE – Madge Mathews Enloe, 91, passed peacefully at her home in the loving embrace of her daughter, Friday, October 18, 2024.

Madge was born in 1933 at home, on the family farm, outside of Toccoa, GA. The daughter of Thomas Hoyt and Jessie Fulbright Mathews, the second of four children. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Cohen Mathews (the late Coleen), and her beloved husband, Verlin Wesley Enloe.

Madge enjoyed a Georgia farm family childhood, moving to Canton, NC, with The Hoyt and Jessie Family, entering first grade school, in Canton. She grew up in a loving Christian home, graduating from Canton High School. Her first employment was at the dime store in Canton where, as a teenager, she eagerly shared her earnings as gifts for and with her family. She enjoyed visits and outings with family and friends, and especially trips to Georgia.

She met the love of her life Verlin at a dance in Canton asking to be introduced. They soon married, beginning a life of love together, becoming inseparable through their years. Theirs was a rare, and remarkable romance, and loving lifelong marriage. They shared sweet adoration, love, tender kindness, with shared values of dignity and respect for one another. A special love story; their memories live on in the hearts of their family and friends, creating a legacy of faithfulness, love and resilience.

Madge continued working with a high work ethic and a passion for dedication and contributing to her community. She was employed by The Asheville Credit Bureau, and later created and operated The Haywood County Credit Bureau, in her own home office under Crystal Strom. She later worked at The Haywood County Hospital and obtained her Associates to continue working in their pharmacy, until her late retirement. She contributed to the building of The Haywood Regional Health & Fitness Center and was often awarded ‘I Have A Better Idea’ Hospital Award. She was well known for her kindness, compassion, and commitment to helping and serving others.

Madge was gentle and thoughtful and a joy to her family and friends. She enjoyed and loved everyone and everything, especially enjoying accompanying Verlin and Karen on beach vacations, to dog shows, and hunting events. They enjoyed sight-seeing trips across the states, and especially trips to the North Carolina Coast, where they developed forever friendships.

Together they enjoyed family and friend gatherings, having company in their home, and deep family and friendship relationships. They attended Oak Grove Baptist Church, appreciating fellowship and experiencing worship together.

Madge was an extremely devoted wife, mother, family member, and friend. She was a natural and radiant beauty, with a warm and ready smile, and striking jet-black hair.

Faith, family and friends, and the joyous love of relationships was Madge’s true passion. Extremely loving, caring, considerate, and sweet. She was sharply intelligent, with an exceptional mind and memory. Madge maintained a content, humble, and thankful attitude and nature, considering herself, her family, and her home blessed. She enjoyed the beauty of nature, flowers, trees, wildlife, and changing seasons.

She was an excellent homemaker, cook, and gracious hostess. Being a lifelong helpmate to Verlin, and helping Karen brought her her greatest joy and pleasure. She enjoyed quiet times at home, in a cozy blanket, fun, laughter, watching romance and Christmas movies, and appreciated time for reflection, quiet contentment, calm and peace. She was a brilliant gem as a family treasure.

She is survived by one daughter, Karen Yvonne Enloe (Christopher), her sister, Brenda Best (the late Henry), her brother Harold Mathews (the late Diane), and by many loved and dearly loving nieces, nephews, family, and friends.

A graveside service will be held at 2 PM, on Sunday, November 3, 2024, at Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, 39 Robinson Road, Clyde, NC 28721 (off Thickety Road), with the Reverend Steve Harris officiating.
