Majetta Peek

July 2, 1910 — April 3, 2009

Majetta Singleton Peek, age 98, died Friday, April 3, 2009, at Silver Bluff Nursing Home. A native and longtime resident of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Derring and Waneta Welch Singleton. She was preceded in death by her husband, James David Peek, who died in 1957; two brothers, Welch and J. L. Singleton; and two sisters, Blanche Burnette and French Ledford. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church. She retired from Barton's Retail Store and was also formerly employed at Turner's Mens Store both in Waynesville. Majetta loved gardening and growing flowers. She is survived by a son, Thomas Martin Peek and his wife, Diana, of Orlando, FL; a daughter, Betty P. Lackey and her husband, Jack, of Maynardville, TN; two grandsons, David Thomas Peek and his wife, Megan, of Jacksonville, FL and Joseph Martin Peek of Orlando, FL; two granddaughters, Amy Lackey Oliver and her husband, Mark, of Ringgold, GA and Laura Waneta Lackey of Macon, GA; and three great granddaughters; Finley Elizabeth Peek, Elizabeth Ruth Oliver, and Leah Daphene Oliver. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 4, 2009, at Bethel Community Cemetery with the Reverend Richard Warren officiating. At other times, the family will be at the residence, 71 Sonoma Road in the Bethel Community. Memorials may be made to Bethel Community Cemetery Maintenance Fund, c/o Carl Ledford, 154 Kelly Springs Road, Waynesville, NC 28786, or to one's favorite charity.
