Manuel Adam Grant, age 86, of Heavenly Drive died peacefully with his children by his side on Thursday, December 24, 2009, at Haywood Regional Medical Center. A native of Swain County, he was the son of the late Albert Carroll and Ollie Mashburn Grant. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Nettie Grant. He retired in 1985 from Dayco with 36 years of service where he worked in quality control. Manuel was a member of Bethel Baptist Church which he loved. He also enjoyed trading cars and gardening. He was a United States Army veteran serving in World War II. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Eleen Wells Grant; a son, Roger Allen Grant and his wife, Jutta H. of Bethel; a daughter, Shirley G. DeWeese and her husband, Mike, of Asheville; six sisters, Edith McKinney of Lynchburg, VA, Nellie Jenkins and her husband, Gerald, of Waynesville, Eva Mae Edwards and her husband, Joe, of Canton, Evelyn Grant and Cecil Caldwell of Bethel, Patricia Worley of Canton, and Shelia Rogers and her husband, Gary, of Canton; a half sister, Ruth Barnes of High Point; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 27, 2009, at Bethel Baptist Church with the Reverend Dr. Roy Kilby, Reverend Charlie Sams, and Reverend Gerald Jenkins officiating. Burial will follow at Bethel Community Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 3:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Pallbearers will be Frank Morgan, Terry Edwards, Marty Jenkins, Brandon Worley, Zene Wells, Steve Allen, Johnny Elliott, and Roger Grant. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Haywood Regional Medical Center Hospice, 560 Leroy George Drive, Clyde, NC 28721.
