Margaret Canty

Maggie Valley, MARGARET ("MARGIE") ROSE CANTY, 75, died Sunday, July 31, 2011, at her cabin in Maggie Valley, NC. Born in Baltimore, Md, on August 17, 1935, Margie lived most of her life in the Rockledge/Cocoa area in Florida. She received a bachelor's degree from Barry College (Miami) and a Master's degree in Education from Rollins College (Winter Park). As a lifelong educator, Margie taught and positively influenced thousands of students both in Rockledge and all over the world, as she taught overseas in both Germany and the Philippines. Margie was a devout Catholic and an active member of her church and made many friends both through the church and through her years as an educator. Margie enjoyed traveling and photography and usually combined the two hobbies, spending her retirement years going on trips and cruises with several of her best friends. She divided her time between her love of the Indian River country in Cocoa and her love of the mountains in Maggie Valley. Margie is preceded in death by her parents, Timothy Andrew Canty and Alice Bostwick Canty, and her sister Helen (Canty) McKeown Berns. She is survived by her sister Alice (Canty) Thorn; nieces (Kathleen Thorn Cano, Patricia Thorn Phipps, Carol McKeown Dodson, and Rachel McKeown Webb) and nephews (Michael Andrew Thorn, Brian Stuart Thorn, and Timothy Andrew McKeown); grandnieces and grandnephews; and numerous dear friends. Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, August 5, 2011 at Saint Margaret's Catholic Church in Maggie Valley. Reverend Gerard LaPointe will officiate. A gathering of friends will be held in Cocoa, FL at a later date. Memorials may be sent to the Sisters of St. Joseph, PO Box 3506, St. Augustine, FL 32085-3506.
