Waynesville-Margaret Jane Coward, age 80, of 125 Rainbow Road, died Monday, February 14, 2005 at St. Joseph's Hospital. A native of Haywood County, she was the daughter of Lloyd and Annie McGinnis Grasty and stepdaughter of Jarvis. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Medford Grasty; three sisters, Helen Leatherwood, Eula Teague, and Myrtle Finney. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, and being with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a member of North Hazelwood Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Robert R. Coward, Sr.; a daughter, Geane Birchfield and her husband, Frank, of Waynesville; five sons, Fred Carver and his wife, Ruby, of Asheville, Tommy Carver of Waynesville, Bobby Coward and his wife, Pat, of Old Fort, Bill Coward and his wife, Susan, of Maysville, GA, and Bobby Coward and his wife, Lisa, of Waynesville; two sisters, Lizzie Huffman and Mildred Mull, both of Waynesville; seventeen grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; and 5 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 17, 2005 in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Homes and Cremation Services with Reverend James Hensley and Reverend Kenneth Rhinehart officiating. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 16, 2005 at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be grandsons, Kevin, Chad, Todd, and Christopher Coward, Charlie and Brandon Carver, and Steve Birchfield. Honorary pallbearers will be Stuart Matney, Mark Burris, Mark Tice, Danny Moody, and John Jordan. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, VA 23058-5216.
