Margaret Jewell Rhinehart Beall

Margaret Jewell Rhinehart Beall of Waynesville died Friday January 3, 2025, at Haywood Regional Medical Center after a brief illness. Jewell was a lifelong resident of Haywood County. She was the daughter of the late John E. and Annette Rogers Rhinehart. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Charles M. Beall and her sister Mildred R. Plemmons.

She is survived by her three daughters Anna Beall of Clyde, Cynthia Hyatt of Greenville, SC, and Margaret (Maggie) Pollock and husband Bill of Raleigh. Also, she is survived by her grandchildren Alex Pollock and fiancé Laura Katherine Crum of Birmingham, AL and Anne Pollock of Los Angeles, CA, and nephews Kent Plemmons (Eileen), Keith Plemmons, and Michael Plemmons (Phyllis), all of Waynesville.

Jewell graduated from Clyde High School in 1951 where she was voted “cutest” in her class. Like many young girls of that era, she wanted to become a flight attendant in the new and glamorous world of commercial aviation. She interviewed with TWA Airlines in Kansas City but decided it wasn’t for her. She returned home and went to business college in Knoxville, Tennessee with her good friend Alice Neal Burch where they made many fun memories. She possessed more common sense than should be allowed and was always beautifully organized.

Jewell was an administrative assistant for most of her career, first for Champion International and then for several directors at the Haywood County Department of Social Services. She was a 50 year plus member of the Hugh Rogers Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). She had a wonderful soprano voice and sang for countless weddings, funerals, and events. Jewell’s family was one of the founding members of Clyde Central United Methodist. Her faith community was an integral part of her life, and she was the long-time chair of the worship committee and was a lifelong member of the choir. She volunteered with Meals on Wheels for many years and was always quick to check in on those less fortunate.

Above all, Jewell was a devoted wife and mother, always putting her husband and daughters first. She became an instant and loving mother when she married Charles, embracing his two daughters, Anna and Cynthia, as her own with open arms and a generous heart. Several years later, their daughter Margaret was born. She celebrated their achievements, comforted them in difficult times, and guided them with wisdom. She was their biggest cheerleader, always offering encouragement and support. She made sure they felt cherished, and her love was unconditional.

Jewell and Charles travelled to many wonderful places in their 55 years of marriage including Europe, the Holy Land and much of the United States. She supported Charles faithfully in his career and during his years in the North Carolina General Assembly. Jewell was a true Southern hostess and was happiest when everyone was together and eating good food. She was joyful, approachable, kind, and a faithful friend to many. She loved her grandchildren, Alex and Anne, fiercely and was very involved in their lives and was game for almost anything they wanted to do. Her grandchildren would brag that she was the only grandmother they knew who would ride roller coasters with them.

We do not know what we will do without her, and we all hope we can honor her each day by living up to her example of how to treat others. She lived a life full of faith, love, and hope. The family would like to thank her wonderful caregiver Sue Smith, family and friends who frequently came by to visit and sit with Jewell on her patio where she loved to enjoy the sunshine, socialize, and look at her beloved mountains.
