Waynesville-Margie Mae Hooper Hall, age 88, passed away peacefully Sunday evening on July 16, 2006 at Haywood Regional Medical Center. She was the daughter of the late Thomas Dillard Hooper and Annie Mae Moore Hooper. Margie was born on January 16, 1918 in the Caney Fork Community of Jackson County where she lived until the age of 18 before moving to neighboring Waynesville. She had a great talent for basket weaving and perfected this craft for the past 30 - 35 years. A native Cherokee woman taught her this skill at Southwestern Community College. Margie later taught basket making classes at Southwestern and exhibited many of her baskets at state fairs. At the time of her passing, an effort was being made to have her handmade Appalachian basketry exhibited at a branch of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James E. Hall; her son, James "Jim" Hall; a daughter, Judith Ann Hall Curtis; and two brothers, Clarence and Herbert Hooper. She is survived by one daughter, Lyda Barrera; a daughter-in-law, Iris Hall; a son-in-law, Terry Curtis; four sisters, Catherine Jordan, Authorine Smathers, Lois Freeman, and Imogene Hall; two brothers, Manuel and Carroll Hooper; grandchildren, Andrea Hall, Julie Keffer and husband, Jerry, Stacy Ward and husband, Keith, Karl Wingruber Jr., Gray Hall and wife, Lori, Joseph Wingruber, Melissa Williams and husband, Donnie, and Lesley Curtis; seven great grandchildren, Jacob Darovitz, Jarrod Miller Michael Miller, Ryan Hall, Connor Hall, Neil Williams, and Katie Williams; and three step great-grandchildren, Tylor and Katie Keffer and Jerry Keffer, III. She was a kind and loving grandmother and great grandmother who will truly be missed by all who knew and loved her. Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 19, 2006 at Pleasant Balsam Baptist Church with Reverend Eddie Deitz officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society, 90 Stiles Road, Canton, NC 28716.
