Clyde, Geneieve Margie Coggins Rice, age 72, of Summerset Drive, passed away on Sunday, March 30, 2014 at Mission Hospital. A native of Jackson County, she was the daughter of Frances Carroll Coggins of Sylva and the late Lambert Andrew Coggins. Margie graduated top of her class from Cullowhee High School in Cullowhee, North Carolina and graduated Cum Laude from Western Carolina University where she earned her Masters in Secondary Education. She was a member of Alpha Phi Sigma, and the American Chemical Society, was selected by The College Board to review the National AP Chemistry Exam, and also served as School Board Chairman for Tri County Schools in Jackson County, North Carolina. Margie taught at Scottsville Elementary School in Scottsville, Virginia; Randolph Junior High School in Montgomery County, Maryland; Scotts Creek School in Jackson County, North Carolina; Camp Lab School in Cullowhee, North Carolina; and also taught Biology and AP chemistry at Hickory High School in Hickory, North Carolina; and Biology at Tuscola High School in Haywood County, North Carolina. Margie was a member of Foster Seventh-day Adventist Church of Asheville, North Carolina; member of Community Service Board and Assistant Treasurer at Foster Seventh-day Adventist Church in Asheville; Chairman of Hickory Seventh-day Adventist School Board in North Carolina. She also served as treasurer of the Seventh-day Adventist Church of Franklin, North Carolina and Sylva, North Carolina and was a past member of First Baptist Church of Cullowhee. In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband of 52 years, David O. Rice, Sr.; three sons, David O. Rice, Jr. of Newton, North Carolina, Paul Andrew Rice and his wife, Dana Marguerite, of Sierra Vista, Arizona, Michael Thomas Rice of Millegdeville, Georgia; two sisters, Linda Kreitlow and her husband, Bill, of Ellicott City, Maryland and Judith Allison, of Dillsboro; and one sister-in-law, Diane Rice Mitchell and her husband, Robert, of Charlottesville, Virginia. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 1, 2014 in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Patrick Williams and Reverend Phil Rosburg officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the funeral home.
