Margie Smiley

Margie Virginia Gentry Smiley, age 85, died Monday, March 9, 2009 at Haywood Regional Medical Center. A native of Buncombe County, she was a daughter of the late J.B. and Mary Loretta Plemmons Gentry. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Smiley, who died in 1985; one son, Ernest Lee Smiley; four sisters; and two brothers. Margie was a member of Good News Baptist Church. She enjoyed spending time outdoors, cooking, gardening and fellowshipping with her friends and family. She is survived by a son, Bruce Smiley and his wife, Virginia, of Candler; three daughters, Dartha Gibson and her husband, Clyde, of Jonathan Creek, Emily Lazelle Thomason and her husband, James, and Esther Rice and her husband, Charles, all of Canton; two sisters, Etta Henn and her husband, Frank, of Fletcher, and Margaret Webb of Lake Junaluska; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren. The family wishes to express a special thank you to the staff of Haywood Regional Medical Center and her two caregivers, Glenda Stanley and Gwen Watts. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 12, 2009 in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Steve Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Bon-A-Venture Cemetery on Newfound Road. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Phillip Rice, Michael Gibson, David Thomason, Jason and Russell Smiley, and Jack DeLuca.
