Marian Jean Vogtman, 87, a devoted wife, caring mother and grandmother, active business woman and long-time resident of Cumberland, MD passed away, Saturday, February 26 , 2011, at Deerfield Episcopal Retirement Community in Asheville, N.C.
Born December 12, 1923, in Washington, Michigan, Marian was the daughter of the late Albert C. and Martha (Czischke) Goeschel. She came from a large loving family and enjoyed their company. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde G. Vogtman, who died in 2003, as well as two brothers, Albert and Norman Goeschel and a sister, Gertrude Rugenstein.
Marian married Clyde G. Vogtman in 1947. She was active with her husband in a number of businesses around the Detroit, Michigan area. In 1959 they relocated to Clyde's home town of Frostburg, MD were they were members of the Zion United Church of Christ. That same year they founded the Continental Motel, Inc. in Cumberland, MD. Mrs. Vogtman was always known for her friendly outgoing manner by all their friends, guests, and service providers. Marian and Clyde remained active in business until 1983, when the couple retired to Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. They moved to Asheville, N.C. in 2002.
Surviving are two daughters, Karen King and her husband Robert, Cumberland; Carol Gerson and her husband, Allan, Arden, N.C.; three grandsons, Robert King II, Michael King and wife, Michelle, and Mark King; great-granddaughter, Alexis King; brother, Calvin Goeschel and wife, Lorna; sister Rosalind Chrzanowski and husband, Joseph; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 2, 2011 in the Healthcare Chapel of Deerfield Episcopal Retirement Community, with Rev. Morgan Gardner and Rev. Barbara Eldridge officiating.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made in memory of Marian Vogtman to St Giles Chapel, Deerfield Episcopal Retirement Community, 1617 Hendersonville Rd, Asheville, NC 28803.
The Vogtmans wish to extend a sincere thank you to the very compassionate and caring staff in the Deerfield skilled-care unit. Marian always felt 'at home' and was truly treated like their family. She was very grateful for their services.
