Marie Myers

Marie Smathers Myers, age 94, died on Saturday, October 22, 2011, after several years of declining health. Marie was a native of Haywood County and lived there most of her life. She was born on the family farm on September 25, 1917, to Dollie and Luster Smathers. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her brother, Lenoir, and her husband, Howard. Marie loved life, her family, her friends, and being outdoors. She was as comfortable at an elegant party as much as she was outside feeding the cows on the family farm. She was a talented seamstress and homemaker and excellent helpmate for her husband, Howard. They were married 58 years and through hard work reached most of their goals for this life. Left to cherish her memory are daughters, June Owen and Rebecca Greene (Bruce) both of Asheville; grandchildren, Tripp Owen of Asheville, Scott Owen of Fayetteville, Gregg Owen of Charlotte, Mary Elizabeth Porray (Greg) of Dallas, Texas, and John Bartelme, Jr. (Lauren) of Fairfax, Virginia; great-grandchildren, Camryn Owen, Ellie and Caroline Porray, and Amelia Bartelme. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 25, 2011, at Garrett-Hillcrest Mausoleum Chapel with the Reverend Jay Meadows officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. Entombment will follow.
