Marie Surrett

Edna Marie Burrell Surrett, age 74, of the Beaverdam community, passed away on Thursday, March 20, 2014 at Silver Bluff Nursing Home. A native of Haywood County, Marie had lived in Raleigh for 30 years. She was a daughter of the late John Hugh and Mary Lucinda Sawyer Burrell. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers, James, Willie, David, and Jack Burrell; and an infant sister, Mary Burrell. She was a member of Beaverdam Baptist Church where she was an active member, was instrumental in her volunteer efforts with the Manna Food Bank and the Beaverdam community center. Marie especially enjoyed gardening and working in her flowers. She will be remembered for her delicious cooking and her loving kind spirit she showed to all her family and friends. Even through her illness, Marie always kept a smile and optimistic attitude, which was infectious to those around her. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Ralph "Junior" Surrett, Jr.; two daughters, Sharon Surrett Vinson and her husband, William of Raleigh, and Sonya Surrett Rogers, and her husband, Scott, of Littleton, Colorado; one son, Steven Lee Surrett of Franklinton; four sisters, Darlene Hawkins and her husband Jim, Carolyn Conard and her husband, Bruce, all of Sevierville, Tennessee, Shirley Arrington and her husband, Ralph, of Waynesville, and Katherine Burrell of Cosby, Tennessee; two brothers, Clarence and Claude Burrell, both of Canton; two grandchildren, Daniel Jacob Vinson, and Jonathan McKinley Surrett; one great-grandchild, Kira Vinson; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 23, 2014 in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Gene Worley officiating. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service.
