Marion Garrett

January 6, 1927 — March 28, 2005

Lake Junaluska-Marion Huey Garrett, age, 78, died Sunday, March 28, 2005 at her home. A native of Enterprise, Alabama, she was the daughter of the late George Bolling Huey, Jr. and Vonceil Chancey Huey. She was also preceded in death by a son, William W. Garrett, Jr.; and a brother Bolling Huey. Mrs. Garrett received her B.S. from Huntingdon College, her M.S. in Biology from the University of Alabama, her Ph.D. in Anatomy from the University of Alabama Medical Center. She completed her post-doctoral program at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Nuro-histology. She taught at the University of Alabama, Birmingham Center, Stamford University, Yale University, Siena College and the University of Tennessee Medical Center. She and her husband, co-publish the Tennessee Family Law Newsletter, and she edited his book, Tennessee Divorce, Alimony, and Child Custody, Thompson-West Publishing Co. A devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, Mrs. Garrett was always active in church and community activities. Since retirement, she served on the Board of Directors of Haywood Christian Ministry, Chairman of the Junaluskans Scholarship Committee, Chairman of the Junaluska Library Committee and President of Haywood Habitat for Humanity. She was selected as Chief Junaluska in 1999. She and her husband, Walton, have been very interested in providing needed education opportunities for Haywood County students. Scholarships have been provided at the Haywood Community College, First United Methodist Church, Junaluskan's Education Committee, University of Memphis College of Law, and the Enterprise First Methodist Church. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, W. Walton Garrett; a daughter, Susan Garrett Hodgson and her husband, William Mark Hodgson, and their two children, David Blake Hodgson and Angela Susan Hodgson of Los Angelos, NM; and a sister Gloria Huey Crawford of Marion, AL. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, April 1, 2005 at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park with Reverend Dr. Lyn Sorrells, Reverend Garland Young, and Reverend Dottie Gibbs officiating. The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 31, 2005 at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 2, 2005 in the sanctuary of the First United Methodist Church of Waynesville with Reverend Dr. Lyn Sorrells, Reverend Garland Young, and Reverend Dottie Gibbs officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. Memorials may be made to the Garrett Endowed Scholarship Fund at Haywood Community College, 185 Freedlander Drive, Clyde, NC 28721, the Junaluskan's Scholarship Committee, the John Christy Scholarship, c/o First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 838, Waynesville, NC 28786, Haywood Habitat for Humanity, 122 South Main Street, Waynesville, NC 28786, or the Huey-Adcock Scholarship Fund, c/o the First United Methodist Church of Enterprise, AL.
