Martha Gillis

Clyde, Martha Mease Gillis, age 84, of 181 Depot Street, passed away on Thursday, April 9, 2009 at Smoky Mountain Healthcare Center. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late Albert C. and Ethel Henson Mease. She was also preceded in death by five sisters, Pauline M. Schlemmer, Lois M. Anderson, Laura Mease, Dale M. Baker and Florence M. Allen. Martha retired from First Union National Bank as a Clyde Branch Manger with 29 years service. She was an active member of Central United Methodist Church of Clyde. Martha was a All American Basketball Player at Bethel High School in 1942 and 1943. She was a Charter Foundation Member for Haywood Community College and Martha loved and enjoyed her family. She is survived by her husband, of 63 years, Carl Milton Gillis; one daughter, Patricia Ann Gillis, of Canton; one son Paul Douglas Gillis, and his wife, Robyn Rice Gillis, of Greenville, SC; one sister, Virginia Farmer, of Waynesville and two grandchildren, John Paul Gillis, of Greenville, SC and Jacqueline Carlyle Gillis, of Columbia, SC. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 18, 2009 at Central United Methodist Church of Clyde with the Reverend Randy Tingle officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the fellowship hall. at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Central United Methodist Church of Clyde, P.O.
