Marvin Sutton

May 23, 1930 — October 16, 2016

Maggie Valley, Marvin James Sutton, age 86, of Maggie Valley, North Carolina and Clermont, Florida went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, October 16, 2016 at his home in Clermont. Marvin was born on May 23 1930. He and his wife of 67 years, Marie, were both native and longtime residents of Maggie Valley. They were the owners and operators of Starvin Marvin's on US 19 and the Blue Ridge Parkway. He was the son of the late Billy and Florence Sutton. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Marie, who died in June 2016 and brothers, Conley and his wife, Poincey and Edward Sutton, all of Maggie Valley. Marvin's giving and taking care of others in need was his trademark with all who knew him. He was loved by many and well known to people all over the country. Part Cherokee and with little education, known for his cowboy hat, and his business acumen, he built character, a reputation and an empire with a 6th grade education. An Appalachian Mountain Man, he was loved by all people who came from all over just to be fortunate to get to see him and receive a little of his humor and brilliance. Marvin's family lived an unusual life, in fact they had two lives. One buried in our Beloved Great Smoky Mountains of North Carolina and the other in a second home and life in Clermont, Florida. The Cherokee Nation considers him a legend, and the City of Clermont dedicated the only city bench in the history of Clermont in his honor. Marvin is survived by his sons, Lonnie and wife, Rebecca and Danny of Maggie Valley; daughters Jackie Hart and husband, Mike, of Minneola, Florida and Annie Ragar of Clermont, Florida; grand-daughters, Monica Grasty Sadie and husband, Jay, of Lake Mary, Florida, Julie Grasty Kendall and husband, Michael, and Danielle Sutton Rhoden and husband, John, of Clermont; grandsons Brent Sutton and wife, Tessa, of Maggie Valley, Cody and Casey Ragar of Clermont, and 14 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; many dear friends; and as if they were his own daughters, Brenda Sutton Jones of Raleigh, Brenda Hipps of Waynesville and Pat Franklin of Maggie. He is also survived by a sister, Willie Mae Joyner, of Petersburg, Virginia; a brother William Lee Sutton and his wife, Irene, of Maggie Valley; and sister-in-law, Jean Sutton. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 22 in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Jerry Nelson and Reverend Ricky Mason officiating. Interment will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park in Waynesville. Serving as pallbearers will be Orrin Franklin, Rob Jones, Trey Jones, Cody Franklin, Junior Carpenter and Don Carpenter. Honorary pallbearers will be Harry Carpenter and Dalton Franklin. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, October 21 at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in Marvin's name to the Cornerstone Hospice Foundation, 2445 Lane Park Road, Tavares, FL 32778.
