Waynesville-Mary Healy Abston passed away on Wednesday, January 11, 2006 at Haywood Regional Medical Center. Born in Tampa, Florida, she recently had moved to Waynesville after living in Atlanta and Tampa for most of her life. She was the daughter of Catherine Ortmeyer Healy of Tampa, FL and the late Charles Theron Healy. She dedicated her entire life to the service of others. As a nurse for more than thirty years, she loved helping people. She was also extremely active in her community schools, churches, and neighborhoods in both Atlanta and Waynesville. In Waynesville, she was an active member of the Master Gardeners and Long's Chapel church. She set out to make the world a better place in so many different ways, and certainly succeeded. She leaves behind a tremendous legacy through all of her volunteer work. No one spread more joy or was a more loyal friend than Mary Abston. Her life was filled with projects to enrich the lives of others; but always, first in her heart and life, were her surviving husband of 29 ½ years, Philip Abston; her three daughters, Mary Catherine Whisnant and her husband, Adrian, of Covington, GA, Elizabeth Abston of Atlanta, GA, and Charlotte Abston of Tampa, FL. In addition to her mother, she is survived by two sisters, Ann Healy of St. Petersburg, FL and Cathy O'Kelley of Portland, OR; and a brother, Charles Healy, of Albany, NY. Mothering was her truest calling and she did that to perfection. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 14, 2006 at Long's Chapel United Methodist Church with Reverend Robert E. Fuquay, Jr. officiating. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to any of the organizations she loved: Habitat for Humanity, Heifer International, The American Diabetes Association, The American Cancer Society, or the charity of one's choice.
