Mary Brooks

Waynesville, Mary Katherine Ward Brooks, age 75, passed away on Tuesday, May 22, 2018 at Maggie Valley Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.

A native of Jackson County, she was the daughter of the late Grady Ward and Selma Jones Ward Bradley and step-father, Kelly Bradley. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby Brooks, who died in 1974; two brothers Cecil and Carl Ward. Kathy's heart and soul belonged to her family. As a young mother, she never missed an opportunity to support her boys. Kathy was in the stands cheering at each game. Blessed with seven beautiful grandchildren, Kathy's life centered on their happiness. Whether it was playing cards, hosting a tea party, or cheering at baseball and softball games with her grandchildren, Kathy was always there for support. Amidst her triumphs and struggles in life, Kathy was a shining example of a Christ centered woman.

Kathy is survived by two sons, Grady Brooks and his wife, Tonya, of Columbus, Georgia and Kevin Brooks and his wife, Sherri, of Waynesville; one sister, Ellen Ashe and her husband, Winfred, of Sylva; two sister-in-law's, Jean Ward and Mae Greene, both of Sylva; a brother, Grady Ward, and his wife, Barbara, of Lawndale, North Carolina; seven grandchildren, Shana Brooks, Miranda Portino, and her husband, John, Ashley Birchfield and her husband, Glenn, Alisha, Jonathan, Lydia and Levi Brooks; one great-grandchild, Dante Brooks; best friends, Jenny Miller, Nancy Jameson and Judy Peterson.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 26, 2018 in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Jimmy Millsaps and Reverend Mark Caldwell officiating. Burial will follow at Barkers Creek Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:00 until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
