Mary Cooper

March 31, 1914 — August 14, 2009

Waynesville, Mary Agnes Johnson Cooper, age 95, formerly of Cairo, Illinois, died on Friday, August 14, 2009 at Autumn Care. A native of Barlow, Kentucky and a former resident of Cairo, Illinois, Mrs. Cooper was the daughter of the late James Sidney and Gela Johnson. She was also preceded in death by her husband, John C. Cooper, Jr., who died in 1974, and her brother, James S. Johnson, Jr. Mrs. Cooper graduated from Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri. She lived in Arlington, Virginia for twenty-six years where she was active in many church and civic organizations. She moved back to Cairo in 1971, where she was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and continued to be of service to her community. She is survived by her son, John "Jack" Cooper and his wife, Pam, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; her daughter, Nancy Burleson, of Clyde; four grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 22, 2009 at Barlow Cemetery, in Barlow, Kentucky. Memorials may be made to Haywood County Public Library, 678 South Haywood Street, Waynesville, NC 28786 or to Cairo Public Library, 1609 Washington Avenue, Cairo, IL 62914. Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services of Waynesville and Barkett Funeral Home in Cairo, Illinois are in charge of arrangements.
