Mary Duncan

November 6, 1918 — January 21, 2005

Waynesville-Mary Palmer Duncan, age 86, of 65 Elysinia Avenue, died Friday, January 21, 2005 at Mission St. Joseph Health Care System. A native of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late Charles Cleveland Palmer and Effie Brock Palmer. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Frank W. Duncan, who died in 1998; a son, David Duncan who died in 2002; a sister, Thelma Palmer Scruggs; and a brother, Hugh Palmer. She graduated from Waynesville Township High School in 1937 and was employed by Dayco prior to her marriage. She was the oldest living member of Hazelwood Baptist Church and had taught Sunday School since she was 17 and was a member of the current Mission Prayer Group. She enjoyed flower gardening, crocheting, and caring and serving her community and church. She is survived by a sister, Naomi Palmer Hall, of Hazelwood; three nieces, Barbara Bates and her husband, Bill, Sandra Price, and Myrna Harvey; and two nephews, Vincent Hall of Asheville, and Art Palmer and his wife, Cathy, of Raleigh. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 23, 2005 at Hazelwood Baptist Church with Reverend Charles Dean officiating. Burial will follow at Green Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Saturday at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville. Serving as pallbearers will be Greg and Mike Cullen, Blaine Jones, and the men of Hazelwood Baptist Church. Memorials may be made to Hazelwood Baptist Church, 265 Hazelwood Avenue, Waynesville, NC 287876.
