Mary Davis

Waynesville, Mary Elizabeth Davis died peacefully at the age of 94 at Cleveland Pines Nursing Center in Shelby after an extended period of declining health. Born on December 12, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Edwin E. and Hattie Lee Smith and was also preceded in death by her husband, Glen Woodrow Davis, who died in 1982, and two brothers, Charles Edwin and William Jesse Smith. Elizabeth was born in Wake County but later moved to the Spring Creek Community of Madison County where she graduated from high school. In 1937, she was married and was blessed with the birth of two sons. Elizabeth worked as manager of the Spring Creek High School cafeteria for more than 20 years. She was also employed at Belk's Department Store for ten years and later retired from John Graham's Department Store in 2004. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Waynesville and a former member of Spring Creek United Methodist Church. She is survived by her sons, Layten Davis and his wife, Veda, of Hot Springs and Vance Davis and his wife, Janet, of High Point; one sister, Robbie Hargrove of Waynesville; six grandchildren, Amy Davis Madsen, Daniel Edwin Davis, Thad Alan Davis, Jennifer Davis Cook, Christopher Vance Davis, and James Vann Williford; and sixteen great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 8, 2012 at Spring Creek United Methodist Church with Reverend Jimmy Moore officiating. Burial will follow at Green Hill Cemetery in Waynesville. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Saturday at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville. The family wishes to acknowledge the outstanding compassionate care of the staff of Cleveland Pines Nursing Center.
