Mary Evans

Waynesville, Mary Burgess Evans, age 88, of the Jonathan Creek Community, passed away on Tuesday, November 30, 2010 at the Brian Center of Waynesville surrounded by her loving family singing her favorite hymns. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late James Lloyd and Maggie Silvers Burgess. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Verlin Evans, who died in 1987; and five sisters, Louise Steinel, Annie Dee Jenkins, Betty Glance, Stella Franklin, Nellie Conard, Isabelle Trantham, and Zannie Green. Mary was a very hard worker who loved to cook and sew, at which she was very talented. She was devoted to her family and loved them very much. Above all, Mary loved her Lord and Savior and was a member of Cove Creek Baptist Church She is survived by three daughters, Para Lee Messer and her husband, Joe, Ollie Gibson and her husband, Keith, and Esther Hightower and her husband, Jerry; two sons, Larry Evans and his wife, Ilene and Charles Evans and his wife, Lou Ann, all of Waynesville; one brother, Ernest Burgess, of Lenoir; a sister, Burnie Mae Messer of Lenoir; nine grandchildren; and eleven great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, December 3, 2010 in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Billy Ferguson officiating. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. Serving as pallbearers will be grandsons and Walker Hill. The family will receive friends from Noon until 1:45 prior to services at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Haywood Baptist Association Relief Center, P.O. Box 628, Clyde, NC 28721.
