Mary Foy

January 29, 1922 — April 6, 2015

Waynesville, Mary Lucia Elwood Foy, age 93, of Welch Street, passed away on Monday, April 6, 2015 at her residence with family members at her side. A native of Detroit, Michigan, she was the daughter of the late James Lawrence and Mary MacFadyen Elwood. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, James Lauchlin Elwood. Mary Lu lived her early years in Michigan and Ohio before moving with her family to North Carolina. She attended Salem College, Montreat College, and Richmond Professional Institute, where she studied costume design and clothing construction. Following graduation, she worked for Thalhimer's Department Store in Richmond, Virginia. After the family returned to the MacFadyen family home in Waynesville for her father's retirement, she worked for the Waynesville Country Club and Rufe Siler's sausage distribution business. Following her marriage and the birth of her children, she was active for many years as a Girl Scout leader, in the First Baptist Church of Waynesville and in the Richland Garden Club. She was an avid knitter, seamstress and bridge player before she lost her vision. She loved life, people and travel and was involved in every aspect of her family's life. She was especially proud of her grandsons, John Henry and Pete. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Henry B. Foy, III; three daughters, Lucia and her husband, Reverend Dr. William C. Gammon of Rincon, Georgia, Jessica and her husband, John Donnelly, of Houston, Texas, and Mary L. "Molly" Foy of Charlotte; and two grandsons, John Henry and James Peter Donnelly. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 11, 2015 in the sanctuary of First Baptist Church of Waynesville with Reverend Dr. Robert Prince and Reverend Dr. William C. Gammon officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the Chapel of the church. The family would like to express special gratitude to the Waynesville Fire Department, the Emergency Medical Service (EMS), the Waynesville Police Department, and her loving caregivers Diane Bryson, Jeanette Hayes and Sue Sharp. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Waynesville Firemen's Association, 1022 North Main Street, Waynesville, NC 28786.
