Mary Francis

Maggie Valley - Mary Setzer Short Francis, better known as Susie died February 3rd 2013 at Smoky Mountain Health and Rehabilitation, at the age of 85 following a long bout with cancer. Susie was the daughter of the late Jacob and Ida Mae Knight Setzer. She was preceded in death by her former husband, Samuel Edward Short, brothers, Glenn, Samuel (Sam), Willard and Dillard, a sister, Wilda Rathbone, and her second husband, Edward (Gene) E. Francis. Surviving are sister-in-law, Lucy Setzer, her brother, Raymond; several nieces and nephews, and step daughter, Vicky Rogers (Joe) and a stepson, Dr. Gary Francis (Barbara). The Setzer family was one of the early pioneers of Maggie Valley and she was born at the foot of what is known as Setzer Mountain. She received her education at Maggie Valley Elementary School, Waynesville Township High School and Blanton Business College. She was employed for a number of years at Enka, later moved to New Jersey where she met and married her former husband Samuel Short. She was employed at the Anchor Hocking glass factory, Salem, New Jersey prior to returning to her home state of North Carolina. Susie has been a member of Maggie Valley United Methodist Church since a child and was one of the longest living members of the church. Since retirement she has spent much of her time with church functions including teacher of the children's church, board member, member of the United Methodist Women and other functions when needed. Funeral services will be held at Maggie Valley United Methodist Church on Friday, February 8, 2013 at 12:00 Noon. Visitation will be 10:30 until 11:45 a.m. prior to the service at the church. Reverend Richard Buff, Pastor Erma Bond, Reverend David Reeves and Reverend Jerry Nelson will be officiating. Burial will follow at Green Hill Cemetery in Waynesville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Maggie Valley United Methodist Church, P.O.Box 112, Maggie Valley 28751.
