Mary Gillis

October 16, 1912 — May 11, 2003

Canton-Mary Edna Gillis, age 90, died Sunday, May 11, 2003 at Pisgah Manor Nursing Home.

She was a native and lifelong resident of Haywood and was the daughter of the late O. Floyd and Pearl Binsfeld Gillis. Ms. Gillis taught for 43 years, first in the Canton City School system and later at Pisgah Senior High School. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, member and former president of Haywood County Retired Teachers' Association, member of Canton Presbyterian Church, served as youth leader, Sunday School teacher and superintendent, held offices in Presbyterian Women, and was an elder.

She is survived by cousins.

Memorial services will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 14, 2003 at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Homes with Reverend Beverly Brock and Reverend Riley Covin. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Inurnment will be at Bon-A-Venture Cemetery on Old Clyde Road.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Presbyterian Home for Children, Attn: Betsy Drake, 80 Lake Eden Road, Black Mountain, NC 28711 or to Bon-A-Venture Cemetery Maintenance Fund, 32 Rhoda Street, Canton, NC 28716.
