Mary Grasty

Mary K. (Sally) Messer Grasty, age 73, died on Sunday, October 3, 2010, at her residence. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late Kaywood and Mary Jane Evans Messer. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Paul Grasty, who died in 1996, an infant son, Ronnie Dale Grasty; three brothers, Dennis, Lowell, and O'Dell Messer; and a son-in-law, Billy Clark. She worked at American Enka, and was a cook at Pisgah High School Cafeteria, Dixon's Little Boy, and McDonald's of Canton at Radio Hill. She loved camping at Walnut Point on Lake Chatuge and Cataloochee, cooking and taking care of family and friends. Mary was a wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and mother-in-law. She was a friend to all and put everyone's needs above her own. She is survived by a daughter, Elaine Grasty Clark; two sons, Terry Grasty and his wife, Tammy and Michael Grasty; four grandchildren, Brooke Clark, Nathan Clark and his wife, Lacey, Dustin Grasty, and Ashley Grasty; a great-grandson, Eathan Clark all of Canton; two brothers, Bobby Messer and his wife, JoAnn, of Clyde and Alvin Messer and his wife, Barbara, of Cruso; a sister, Janette Haynie of Baytown, TX; and a sister-in-law, Annie Mae Messer of Thomasville, NC; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 6, 2010, at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Darryl Messer and Reverend Stacy Hightower officiating. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at 120 Messer Valley Lane. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Haywood Regional Medical Center Hospice, 560 Leroy George Drive, Clyde, NC 28721 or to the American Cancer Society, 90 Stiles Road, Canton, NC 28716.
