Mary Leatherwood Harrison passed away Friday, November 18, 2011 at Hospice Atlanta in Atlanta, Georgia with her son at her side. She was born in Waynesville and lived most of her life there. She graduated from Waynesville Township High School. In 1943, Mary married A.D. Harrison, Jr. of Newton, North Carolina while he was stationed with the Army Air Corps in Laredo, Texas. After the war, they moved from Texas to Clinton, North Carolina, where they lived for several years. They then returned to Waynesville, where she and her husband were owners of Stovall's 5¢ and 10¢ Store on Main Street, downtown Waynesville. She lived in Waynesville until 2008, when she moved to Atlanta, Georgia to be near her son and his family. Mary's career included jobs as secretary for law offices, office manager for a local medical practice, clerk for the Town of Waynesville, and office manager for Atlas Press, associated with the Waynesville Mountaineer. Mary was devoted to her family. She was also a giving person, visiting folks in the nearby nursing homes and providing transportation to individuals who could no longer drive. She had a gift for organization and a wonderful attention to detail. This lead to her success in any project she undertook. She was predeceased by her parents, Robert Vance Leatherwood and Grace Allman Leatherwood, her husband, A.D. Harrison, Jr., two sisters, Grace Rutledge and Hazel Moody, two half-sisters, Helen Gallienne and Sara Hamrick and three half-brothers, Howard Leatherwood, Jack Leatherwood, and Bruce Leatherwood. She is survived by her sister, Katherine Pennington of Powell Tennessee, her son and daughter-in-law, Jim Harrison and Linda Judson Harrison and her two grandchildren, Anna Harrison and Brian Harrison, all of Atlanta. The family will receive friends from 6pm to 8pm, on Monday, November 21 at Wells Funeral Home in Waynesville. Funeral Services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 22 at The First Presbyterian Church, Waynesville. Burial will follow at Green Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The First Presbyterian Church of Waynesville, 305 N. Main Street, Waynesville, NC 28786, the American Cancer Society, 90 Stiles Road, Canton, NC 28716 or Hospice Atlanta, 1244 Park Vista Drive, Atlanta, Georgia 30319.
