Mary Hooker

May 28, 1937 — March 29, 2009

Waynesville, Mary Claudia Allen Hooker, age 71, of 65 Church Street, passed away on Sunday, March 29, 2009 at the Brian Center. A native of Fort Worth, Texas, she resided in Birmingham, Alabama and has lived in Western North Carolina since 1985. She was the daughter of the late Frank F. and Inez Renfro Allen. She attended Hollins College and earned her BA Degree in English from the University of Texas. She was a talented watercolor artist whose work was sold locally. She was a devoted christian who gave of her time and talents freely to help others. She was employed by Mountain Projects and also worked for Word Publishing in Asheville. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Waynesville. She is survived by one son, M.A. Hooker; two sisters, Frances Hunter and her husband, Paul, of Birmingham, AL and Jean Morgan of Tyler, TX; nieces and nephews, Aarow Ellis, Lance Evans, Jennifer Bihl, Trey Morgan, Mary Martha Cochran, and Amy Mills. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 2, 2009 in the chapel of First Baptist Church of Waynesville with Reverend Dr. Robert Prince officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mountain Projects, 2251 Old Balsam Road, Waynesville, NC 28786.
