Mary Layman

August 12, 1915 — May 10, 2005

Canton- Mary Virginia Clark Layman- age 89 of the Cruso community died May 10, 2005 at her daughter's residence. She was a native and lifelong resident of Haywood County and a daughter of the late Wilburn and Clyde Pless Clark. Mrs. Layman was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Otis Layman who died in 1983; one brother, Guy Clark and five sisters, Lucy Rogers, Rhoda Smith, Georgia Tatham, Willie Perz and Betty Cope. She graduated from Bethel High School and was a member of East Fork Baptist Church where she was an active member of the choir. Mrs. Layman played basketball for American Enka Corporation where she was named All-American. She loved to watch and cheer for her children and grandchildren when they played sports. She was also the secretary/treasurer of the Gwyn Cemetery and New Cruso Cemetery for many years. All of her friends and neighbors were very important to her throughout her life. She is survived by four daughters; Geraldine Gant and her husband Darrell of Canton, Linda Lovelace and her husband Wallace of Clyde, Janice Sorrells and her husband Dale of Mills River and Shelia Nix of Clyde; 11 grandchildren, Sandy Suarez, Scott Gant, Kim Hannah, Carol Harkins, Theresa Harper, Mike Lovelace, Jeanna Johnston, Robin Reeves, April Bryson, Amy Tiller and Tonya Nix and 22 great-grandchildren. A special thanks to Mary's caregivers, Brenda Jones and Virginia Kelley. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, May 12, 2005 at East Fork Baptist Church with Reverend Johnny Foster and Reverend Jerry Ensley officiating. Burial will follow at New Cruso Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home. Grandson's will serve as pallbearers and her nephews will serve as honorary pallbearers. At other times, the family will be at the residence of her daughter, Shelia Nix, 2117 Old Clyde Road. Flowers are appreciated but memorials may be made to Haywood Regional Medical Center Hospice, Home Health Building, 560 Leroy George Drive, Clyde, NC 28721.
