In the early morning hours of October 13, 2021, Mary Louise Curtis McClure, age 80, was welcomed into her eternal home. She was a beloved wife, mother, sister, friend, and the best Granny ever.
A native of Haywood County, Mary was one of 11 children born to the late Rufus and Fannie Trull Curtis. She was also preceded in death by her dear husband of 46 years, Gene McClure; beloved daughter, Sandra McClure; and six of her siblings, Frances Rhinehart, Margaret Curtis, Robert Curtis, Bud Curtis, Annie Jane Webb, and Carolyn Curtis.
Mary retired from Dayco in 1996 with 28 years of dedicated service. She was a real character who leaves behind many great stories for her family and friends to remember and share. Mary was also known for her excellent baking skills, especially her peanut butter cookies, and her ability to never meet a stranger. She was a member of Francis Cove United Methodist Church and sang in the choir for many years. We now know she is singing in God’s heavenly choir. Even through failing health, Mary sustained her unwavering faith.
Mary is survived by her two sons, Tony McClure (Rebecca) of Clyde and Jimmy McClure of Waynesville; three sisters, Edna Crawford of Waynesville, Amelia Mullinax of Wilmington, North Carolina, and Marie Edwards of Waynesville; one brother, Gene Curtis of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. Also left to treasure their Granny’s memory are five grandchildren, Brea (Kristy) Evans and Dustin Evans, and Dylan, Kristen, and Kaylen McClure; two great-grandsons, Princeton and Taylor; and her constant companion, Ozzie, her rescue doggie.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 16, 2021 at Francis Cove United Methodist Church with Reverend Kenneth Rhinehart and Reverend Terry Rowland officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 3:00 p.m. on Saturday at the church. Burial will follow at Green Hill Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers will be Dustin Evans, Brea Evans, Dylan McClure, Mark Crawford, Terry Ramsey and Jack Curtis.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of NC, 1305 Navaho Drive, Suite 101, Raleigh, NC 27609 or Francis Cove UMC, 2530 Crymes Cove Road, Waynesville, NC 28786.
