Mary Pless Wood

Mary Pless Wood, 56, was a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend who touched the lives of many with her kindness and compassion. Mary was born on September 18, 1967, to Butch and Christine Pless in Haywood, North Carolina and passed away on April 30, 2024, in Buncombe County, North Carolina at Mission Hospital. 
 
Mary was a life long resident of Haywood County and dedicated her life to caring for others as a health care provider at Pisgah Valley Retirement Community. She pursued her dreams with determination and earned an Associate degree in the field she was so passionate about. Her nurturing personality shone through in everything she did - always giving, always caring, always helping, and always loving. Beyond her professional life, Mary found joy in simple pleasures such as beach trips, tending to her beloved flowers and gardening, and most of all, spending time with her family. Family was at the core of her being. She adored the elderly and found fulfillment in bringing comfort to those around her.
 
Mary leaves behind a legacy of love and selflessness that will be carried on by those who cherished her. In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband of 28 years, Scotty Wood of Waynesville; her children, Brittney Owen of Waynesville, Christian Wood of Waynesville, and Casey Wood of Waynesville; her brothers, Kenny Summey of SC, Daren (Suzette) Pless of Canton, and Shaun (Jennifer) Pless of Waynesville; as well as her granddaughters, Hazel Owens and Opal Owens.

A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 5, 2024, at Bethel Baptist Church, with Reverend Dr. Roy Kilby and Reverend Donnie Henson officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Entombment will follow the service at Pisgah View Memorial Park Mausoleum.
