Mary Rose

Canton - Mary Elizabeth Young Rose, age 81, formerly of the Thickety community, passed away Monday, February 8, 2016 at Applingwood Health Care Center in Memphis, Tennessee. Mary was a native of Haywood County and the youngest daughter of the late Lyda and Mamie Smith Young. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and Cecil Young; and three sisters, Louise Whitted, Marie Fletcher and Pansy Medford. She was a long term member of Oak Grove Baptist Church in Clyde. After relocating, she became a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Burlington, North Carolina where she served as a greeter and assisted with church dinners and Vacation Bible School. Mary was known for her sense of humor and laugh along with her love for feeding friends and family wonderful meals and baked goods. An avid sports fan, she supported Pisgah High School athletics and later in life enjoyed volunteering for 10 years as an usher for Carolina basketball games at the Dean E. Smith Center. Mary made friends and helped people wherever she lived and will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. Left to cherish her memory are her son, Richard Rose and wife, Debra, of Germantown, Tennessee; a daughter, Karen Rose of Pittsboro, North Carolina; two granddaughters, Kristin Rose of Cincinnati, Ohio and Jenna Gunter and husband, Alan, of Richmond Hill, Georgia; one brother, Benny Young and wife, Ruth, of Clyde; one sister, Polly Hall of Asheville; two great-grandchildren, Kaylan and Preston Gunter along with numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, February 13, 2016 in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend James Parham officiating. Burial will follow at Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 11:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 4600 Park Road, Suite 205 , Charlotte, NC 28209.
