Mary Sheffield

Waynesville, Mary Sue Smathers Sheffield, formerly of the Peters Cove Community died on Sunday, January 27, 2008 at the Brian Center. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late Jodie B. and Minnie Tate Smathers. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Robert Sheffield, who died in 1995; one sister, Frances Owen; and two brothers, Tommy and J.C. Smathers. Mary enjoyed gardening and square dancing and was very involved in the lives of her twin daughters. She was a member of Bethel Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday-School and was known for her excellent cooking. Mary was always ready to pitch in and help anyone. She is survived by her daughters, Jan Sheffield Orr and her husband George Robert, of Hendersonville and Anne Sheffield Hyde of Maggie Valley; one sister, Lucy Summerow, of Waynesville; two grandchildren, Robin Orr Metts and Tammy Orr Gryder and her husband, Matthew; four great grandchildren, Zachary and Taylor Metts, Ethan Daugherty, and Chase Gryder; and one very special nephew, Jimmy Smathers. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 31, 2008 at Bethel Presbyterian Church with Reverend W. Riley Covin officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. Memorials may be made to Bethel Presbyterian Church, 664 Sonoma Road, Waynesville, NC 28786 or one's favorite charity.
