Mary Elizabeth Shook of Balsam passed away May 30, 2011. She was born August 3, 1921, to Vaughn R. Rhinehart Sr. and Eva Hooper Rhinehart, and was raised in the Saunook community. Mary Elizabeth graduated from Waynesville Township High School in 1939 and married her high school sweetheart, Grady Clifton Shook Sr. They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary this past December. She was a member of the Pleasant Balsam Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Hilda Way Rhinehart, who died as an infant, Leona R. Clark, and Mildred R. Arrington, as well as a brother, Raymond Rhinehart, and a great-grandson, Triston Rice. Surviving her are her husband; their two sons, G. C. Shook Jr. of Balsam, and William Shook Sr. and wife, Betty Llyn, of Brevard; and their daughter, Kathryn S. Green of Waynesville. Also surviving her are six grandchildren, William Shook Jr., of Balsam; Dr. Sherri Green, of Durham; Shelli Green Noca, of Lake Norman; Melanie Shook, of Tuckaseegee; and Kevin Shook and Trina Shook Hendricks, both of Brevard; as well as seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; a sister, Betty Rhinehart Watson, of Franklin; and two brothers, Vaughn R. Rhinehart Jr. and John Rhinehart, both of Waynesville. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, June 2, 2011 at 4:00 p.m. at Wells Funeral Home, Main Street, Waynesville with Reverend Bobby Downs officiating. Visitation will be held from 2:30 until 3:45 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be at Plott Cemetery in Saunook, following the service. Flowers are welcome, or memorials can be made to the Haywood County Public Library, 678 S. Haywood Street, Waynesville, NC 28786 or Jackson County Public Library, 755 W. Main Street, Sylva, NC 28779.
