Matt Burress

Canton-Matt Vernon Burress-84, of 19 Pharr Street, died Friday, October 18, 2002 at Haywood Regional Medical Center.

He was a native and lifelong resident of Haywood County and was the son of the late Matt Love and Sarah Elizabeth Mann Burress. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Maude Kell Burress. He retired from American Enka with 40 years of service and was a member of Ridgeway Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 13 years, Flora Pitts Burress of Canton, one daughter and her husband, Cynthia Skidmore and Reverend O. J. of Canton, one step-daughter and her husband, Shirley Phillips and Doug of Canton, one son and his wife, Edward Burress and Betty Jane of Bryson City, two step-sons and their wives, Charles Johnson and Han of Nashville, TN and Carroll Johnson and Wanda of Spindale, NC, one sister, Mary McCall of Frostproof, FL, 8 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.

Funeral services will be at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, October 20, 2002 at Ridgeway Baptist Church with Reverend Jack W. Collins officiating. Burial will follow at New Cruso Cemetery with Masonic graveside rites being conducted by the Sonoma Lodge #472 AF & AM of which he served as Past Master. The family will receive friends from 7:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Wells Funeral Homes of Canton.
