Mattiewood Mccurry

Mattiewood Warren McCurry, 91, of Carolina Mountain Drive died on Tuesday, February 23 at St. Joseph Hospital.

She was born in Candler to the late Weldon Hiram Warren and Mary Etta Morgan Warren and was preceded in death by sisters Grethel Cooper, Betty King and Tenna Strange and brothers Weldon Warren Jr. and Sam Warren.

Survivors include a son, Dan; a daughter, Louise; and two grandsons Robert and Andrew McCurry all of Chicago. Also surviving are two sisters Juanice Warren and Violet Ducker and two brothers Robert and Levon Warren. Carol, her husband of 66 years, died November, 2009.

A life long resident of Buncombe County, Mattiewood was, for nearly a half-century, a faithful member of Hominy Baptist Church and its Women's Missionary Union. In her home church, White Rock Baptist, she had served as Training Union Director impacting the lives of two generations of young people. With husband, Carol, she provided hundreds of volunteer hours at the local VA hospital. She was a former member of the Eastern Star and the Ladies Auxiliary for the VFW and American Legion.

Mattiewood retired with 50 years service from the American Enka Corporation where she was a strong member of the United Textile Workers Local 2598.

The McCurry's will receive friends from 10-11 a.m. Friday, February 26 at Hominy Baptist Church with her service at 11 a.m. and burial to follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Officiating will be the Rev. Dr. Joe Yelton and the Rev. Dr. Dan McCurry.

Pallbearers will be Robert McCurry, Andrew McCurry, Nolan Davis, Louise McCurry, Robert Warren and Franklin Redmond.
