Maureen Walther

Waynesville, Maureen Meehan Walther, age 76, passed away on Wednesday, December 24, 2008 at her residence. A native of the Bronx, New York City, New York, she had resided in Eastport, NY in Long Island before moving to Haywood County in 1989. She was a teacher for many years both in the Bronx and Eastport, Long Island, and also as a probation officer in the Suffolk County, New York Probation Department. She was a talented quilter and an active member and past president of the Maggie Valley Quilters Guild and was also a member of Grace Church in the Mountains. She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Kenneth Walther; one son, Andrew Walther and his wife, Kim, of Center Moriches, Long Island, NY; one daughter, Kirsten Ann Walther of Queens, NY; one brother, William Meehan of Flushing, NY; and three grandchildren, Jordan, Christopher, and Layne Walther. The family would like to extend a special thanks to her caregivers, Bea and Donny Hoglen for their special care of Maureen. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. at Grace Church in the Mountains on Tuesday, May 26, 2009. The family will receive friends following the service at the church.
