Waynesville, Maureen Meehan Walther, age 76, passed away on Wednesday, December 24, 2008 at her residence. A native of the Bronx, New York City, New York, she had resided in Eastport, NY in Long Island before moving to Haywood County in 1989. She was a teacher for many years both in the Bronx and Eastport, Long Island, and also as a probation officer in the Suffolk County, New York Probation Department. She was a talented quilter and an active member and past president of the Maggie Valley Quilters Guild and was also a member of Grace Church in the Mountains. She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Kenneth Walther; one son, Andrew Walther and his wife, Kim, of Center Moriches, Long Island, NY; one daughter, Kirsten Ann Walther of Queens, NY; one brother, William Meehan of Flushing, NY; and three grandchildren, Jordan, Christopher, and Layne Walther. The family would like to extend a special thanks to her caregivers, Bea and Donny Hoglen for their special care of Maureen. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. at Grace Church in the Mountains on Tuesday, May 26, 2009. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. Memorials may be made to Haywood Regional Medical Center Hospice, 560 Leroy George Drive, Clyde, NC 28721 or a charity of one's choice.
