Waynesville - Max Lewis Spurlin, DDS, 86, of Waynesville passed away Friday, November 21, 2014 at The Homestead. A native of Polk County, North Carolina, he was the son of the late Leland Stanford and Minnie Lee Spurlin. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wonderful wife, Carolyn Ott Spurlin; sons, Lewis Scott Spurlin and Stuart Allan Spurlin and sister, Wilma Spurlin. Dr. Spurlin was a graduate of the University of South Carolina and completed dental school at the University of North Carolina in 1957. After a stint in the US Army, he settled in Waynesville in 1960 and began a 40 year dental practice. He loved playing golf in his beloved mountains and constantly reminded his children that moved away how much they were missing! He is survived by two sons, Stanford Ryan Spurlin (Debbie) of Olathe, Kansas and Max Steven Spurlin (Lisa) of Jackson, Tennessee. His pride and joy were his five grandchildren, Megan Spurlin Evans (Farron) of Olathe, Kansas, Turner Spurlin and Amelia Spurlin of Jackson, Tennessee and Kamryn Spurlin and Kacey Spurlin of Orangeburg, South Carolina. A graveside service will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 29, 2014 at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park.
