Maye Boyd

Waynesville, Maye Davis Boyd, age 97 passed away, Saturday, August 25, 2012 at Autumn Care Nursing Home. Daughter of the late Robert L. and Elizabeth Harrell Davis, pioneer families of Haywood County. She was the wife of Troy Boyd who died in March 1978. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Sara Lee Kelley and Pauline Warren and six brothers, Grover, Robert, Eugene, Johnny, D. C. and J. T. Davis, all of Waynesville. Maye was a graduate of Waynesville Township High School. She attended Western Carolina University where she received a B. S. and M. A. Degree. She taught school 34 years in Haywood County, retiring from Central Elementary School as a first grade teacher in August 1977. Maye was a life member of National Education Association and a member of North Carolina Retired School Personnel. She was active in North Carolina Association of Education and held offices on the local and district levels. Maye was a charter member of Alpha Rho Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa International Sorority for Women Educators. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Waynesville where she taught in the Primary Department and was a member of the adult sanctuary choir. Surviving is her son, Joe E. Boyd and his wife Ruby Ross Boyd of Waynesville; a grandson, Ross Boyd of Greenville, SC; a great-granddaughter, Brooke Boyd; a great-grandson, Blake Boyd and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Monday, August 27, 2012, in the sanctuary of First Baptist Church of Waynesville. Reverend Dr. Robert Prince and Dr. Dick Maples will officiate. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. Serving as pallbearers will be Danny and Ricky Boyd, Jeff and Jody Davis, Rick Kelley, Boyd Ketner and Robert Warren. Honorary pallbearer will be Jerome Boyd. The family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. in the chapel of First Baptist Church prior to the service.
