Michael Churm

Michael William Churm, 52, of Canton, passed away on August 21st at The Brian Center in Waynesville. Michael was the son of Anita Brooks Churm, of Canton and the late William Churm. A 1977 graduate of Pisgah High School, Michael anchored the offensive line as the Center on the 1975 and 1976 State Champion football teams. He represented the Bears in the East-West Shrine Game. Michael attended Duke University on a football scholarship, where he played center and defensive end on the football team. He was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. Upon graduation, Michael was employed by Harris-3M in Houston, TX. After returning to Canton, he worked for UCB-Pharma where he was named to the President's Club as a top representative 5 of 6 years. He has also been employed by Merrill Lynch and Liberty National. Michael was a member of Canton First Baptist Church. He was also extremely active in Canton Lion's Club where he served in numerous capacities including president. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 12 years, dee Churm of Canton; a son, Michael Louis William Churm, of the home; a child whom he raised, Nicholas Anthony Deutsch of Canton; a step-daughter, Aja Lee Amezquita of Cruso; two brothers, Stephen Churm and wife Alison, of North Augusta, SC and Chris Benge and wife Renee, of Canton; two grandchildren, Nicanor and Michael Leon Amezquita; a special friend, "Hoss"; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 25, 2011 in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend James A. Meadows officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
