Michael Ferguson

February 3, 1940 — May 9, 2009

Waynesville, Michael Earl "Mike" Ferguson, age 69, passed away Saturday, May 9, 2009 at Haywood Regional Medical Center. He was a native and lifelong resident of Haywood County and was the son of the late William McKinley and Catherine Muse Ferguson. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Bonnie Hanson and Ruby Alden and a brother, William Ralph Ferguson. Mike graduated from Waynesville Township High School in 1958 and joined the U.S. Coast Guard. He was employed by Champion Paper Company for 17 years and then became a real estate broker, operating his own company for 36 years. He was a licensed general contractor and auctioneer. Mike also received appointments to the N.C. Housing Finance Agency and N.C. Housing Commission. He and his wife, Judy, operated WNC Driving School. He also coached little league basketball and was currently a member of Waynesville Rotary Club and a former member of Sunrise Rotary Club. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Judy Loutrel Ferguson and two sons; Greg Ferguson and Phil Ferguson and his wife, Karin, all of Waynesville; four sisters, Edna Harker of Asheville, Mary Keener and her husband, Lyman and Judy Shirley and her husband, Beuford, all of Waynesville and Claudine Green of California; five brothers, Gerald Ferguson and his wife, Betsy, James Ferguson and his wife, Juanita, Eugene Ferguson, Terry Ferguson and his wife, Nancy, all of Waynesville and Danny Ferguson and his wife, Diane of Hilton Head, SC. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 12, 2009 in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend G.W. Jameson and Reverend Eddie Dietz officiating. Burial will follow at Green Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Serving as pallbearers will be Brad Shirley, Tony and Rick Hanson, Jeff, Randy, Eric and Tim Ferguson, and Doug Harker. Honorary pallbearer will be Eddie Summey. Memorials may be made to the Waynesville Rotary Club, P.O. Box 812, Waynesville, NC 28786.
