Michael Parrott

SSG Michael Calvin Parrott, age 49, of Timnath, CO, formerly of Canton, was killed in action while serving his country with the United States Army in Iraq on Thursday, November 10, 2005. He was a native of Haywood County and was the son of Suzanne Cody Parrott of Canton and the late Leonard Calvin "L. C." Parrott who died April 27, 2005. He was a 1974 graduate of Pisgah High School and a 1983 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Asheville receiving a B.A. degree in Sociology. Following his graduation, he was employed at UNC-A and was currently an engineering aide in utilities location for Colorado State University for the past 15 years. He served in the United States Army for four years active and 11 years in the active reserve and was currently attached to the 115th Forward Artillery Brigade of Cheyenne, Wyoming. Michael enjoyed many outdoor activities, especially running, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, swimming and bicycling. Upon learning of his death, a friend in Colorado quoted that Mike was "a seeker of universal truths and studied obscure religions and history". He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Canton. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 19 years, Meg Corwin of Timnath, CO; a son, Jason Corwin of Fort Collins, CO; a brother, Jim Parrott and his wife, Peggy of Greenville, SC; a niece, Lindsay Parrott; his grandfather, James T. Parrott, Sr. of Canton; and his dog, Dixie. Funeral services will be at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, November 19, 2005 at the Canton chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Alice Day, Chaplain Dan Taylor and Chaplain Dave Hall officiating. Full military rites will be conducted following the service by a detachment from Fort Bragg, NC. The family will receive friends Saturday from 12:00 noon until 2:45 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to radio station KRFC FM Community Radio, 619 S.
