Maggie Valley, Lieutenant Michael Scott "Goon" Price, age 45, passed away on Tuesday, March 14, 2017 following his courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his family and friends at St. Joseph Hospital. Haywood County and the local region have lost a beloved and dedicated law enforcement officer who was a friend to all. His imposing size soon diminished when you met Mike and knew that he was truly a gentle giant and ready to help in any way that he could. A native of Onslow County, North Carolina, Mike was a 1989 graduate of Pisgah High School where he was on the football and wrestling teams and was honored to be selected to play in the Shrine Bowl. Mike began his career in law enforcement with the Hazelwood Police Department and Waynesville Police Department until he joined ranks with the Haywood County Sheriff's Office and had 25 years of service. He was most recently in charge of courthouse security for judges and court personnel. Mike was an instructor at Haywood Community College in the law enforcement curriculum. Mike was an avid weight lifter. He was the recipient of many state and national championships. Additionally he was 1 of 10 individuals selected to participate in a weight lifting competition in Chicago promoting drug free competition. Mike is survived by his wife of 24 years, Mayor Saralyn Carver Price, of Maggie Valley; Jason Davis (Shadow) of Fletcher and Russell Wade (Teresa) of Maggie Valley, whom he loved like sons; parents, Terry and Nancy Calloway, of Fuquay-Varina; a sister, Cindy Calloway Haney (Matthew) of Canton; a brother, Charles Terry Calloway, of Fuquay-Varina; Will and Jessie Caldwell, and Chloe Davis, whom he loved like grandchildren; four nieces, Victoria Haney, Lisa Decker, Alice Camden Morrison and Jenny Clarke; a brother-in-law, Sammy Carver (Susan) of Waynesville; an aunt, Debbie Adkins, of Asheville; three uncles, Rickie Israel, of Ohio, Mike Israel, of Memphis and Stuart Greene (Lisa); and a special companion, Roxy. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, March 20, 2017 at Haywood Community College, Charles Beall Auditorium with Reverend David Reeves, Reverend Kitty Crain and Reverend Tim Lolley officiating. Entombment will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park Mausoleum. Ceremonial rites will be provided by the Haywood County Sheriff's Office. The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 5:00 p.m. on Sunday at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Sarge's Animal Rescue Foundation, P.O.
