Mildred Long Burris, age 86, died Tuesday, May 13, 2008, at John F. Keever, Jr. Solace Center in Asheville. A native of Haywood County and a prior resident of Macon, GA, she was the daughter of the late Fred Lee and Ellen Henson Long. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles L. Burris, Sr.; a son, Bobby Burris; and two brothers, Edwin J. and Frank Long. She won blue ribbons at the county fair for her embroidery. Mildred was a master gardener, flowers and vegetables; "butterfly bushes, "Johnny-Jump-Ups", and daylillies all were her favorites. She canned vegetables out of the garden and also loved making jams and jellies. Her peach preserves were a family favorite. In 1940, she made the winning shot from half-court with five seconds left in the game to give Bethel High School their first state championship in women's basketball. She is survived by a son, Charles L. Burris, Jr., and his wife, Sandra, of Canton; two sisters, Hazel Morgan and Maxine Smathers and her husband, Webb M., all of Canton; three grandchildren, Bobby Burris, Jr., Fred Burris and his wife, Debra, and Charles L Burris, III and Jeanette Trull; and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 17, 2008, at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Pastor James Parham officiating. Burial will follow at Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
