Mildred Cathey

Waynesville, Mildred Leming Whitehouse Cathey, formerly of Hazel Street, passed away on Wednesday, January 1, 2014 at Haywood Lodge and Retirement. A native of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late Rufus Conley and Mabel Edwards Leming. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles B. Cathey, who died in 1993; two sisters, Pat Green and Betty Sherrill; and three brothers, Elmer, Vinson, and Walter Leming. She is survived by a daughter, Judi Whitehouse Justice (Tommie); a son, James R. Whitehouse, Jr. (Shelia), of Grover, North Carolina; two sisters, Verna Burch of Asheville and Nancy Farmer of Sylva; one brother, Robert Leming, of Virginia; 5 grandchildren, Sherri Justice Rose (Eddie), Tina Justice Foster (Tim), Jennifer Harris, Crystal Bowen (Forest), and Mary Nola Webb (Shannon); 13 great-grandchildren; and 6 great-great-grandchildren with another one due in June. Mildred worked at Belk's and retired from John Graham's Department Store in 2007 at the age of 82. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 4, 2014 in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Todd Cole officiating. Burial will be at Green Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11:30 until 1:00 p.m. prior to services at the funeral home. A special thanks to the employees of Haywood Lodge and Retirement Center for their excellent care of "Mammaw" especially to Paul and Micah "Mammaw's Dancing Partners."
