Milton Brown

March 29, 1926 — August 28, 2014

Milton "Bucky" Brown of Clyde died on Thursday, August 28, after eighty-eight years of a joyful life. Born and raised in Clyde, Bucky Brown was the son of Clifford and Annette Brown. He is predeceased by brothers, Bruce, Clifford Ernest, and Mark, and sisters, Hilda Myers and Gladys Coman. Bucky was a WWII veteran who served proudly in the US Navy as the purser on board the USS Gadsen in the South Pacific. He then returned home to Clyde, where he devoted the rest of his life to serving his community. In addition to his position as the first Chairman of the Clyde Chamber of Commerce, this service included thirty-five years as a rural mail carrier for the Clyde Post Office; over sixty years as Director, Vice Chairman, and Chairman of Home Trust Bank-Clyde Savings Bank; twelve years on the Board of Directors of Haywood County Hospital; and a life-long commitment to Clyde First Baptist Church as a devoted member, Chairman of the Board of Deacons, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, and Sunday School Teacher and Superintendent. Bucky was an avid fisherman and especially loved Fontana Lake; he also gloried in Chambers Mountain, which he loved to view from his window or deck. Although he enjoyed traveling, he always said that Clyde was the most beautiful place on earth. He is survived by his wife of sixty-four years, Gladys Chadwell Brown who was originally from Sturgeon, Kentucky; children, David Brown and Becky of Asheville; John Brown and Carolyn of Sarasota, Florida; Beverly Brown and Mary Beth Braker of Pittsboro; as well as grandchildren, Stephanie Brown of Berkeley, California; Laura Brown of Corvallis, Oregon; Matt Greene of Asheville; and Austin Greene of Raleigh. Bucky is also survived by several caregivers: most notably, Robin Owens, Wanda Bryant, Logan Mathews, and Cherish Kennedy. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 7, 2014 at Clyde First Baptist Church with the Reverend Dr. T. David Phillips and Reverend James Parham officiating. The body will lie in state from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. until the service hour. A reception and celebration of life will follow the service in the reception hall. A private family interment will be at Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to The Milton and Gladys Brown Scholarship Fund at the Clyde First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 356, Clyde, NC 28721.
