Monroe Miller

Waynesville, Monroe Albert Miller, age 95, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, January 20, 2017. A native of Yoakum, Texas he was the son of the late Monroe and Edith Praeger Miller. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Margaret Keneally "Peg" Miller, who died in 2002. Monroe was a graduate of Texas A. & M. University. He served as an officer in the United States Army Signal Corps in World War II, where he initially taught radar technology, then later installed and repaired radar systems in the Philippines and the South Pacific. Upon leaving military service at the end of the war, he was co-founder of one of the earliest Computer Companies, Electronic Associates, Inc., a NYSE listed company located in New Jersey, where he designed and manufactured many of the first electronic computers used in industry and the early space program. In 1955, he founded Milgo Electronic Corporation, a company heavily involved in tracking and communication in the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo space programs. He and the company were also instrumental in the development of the first, and subsequently, the high speed modem. He served as President and Chairman of the Board until all its NYSE listed stock was acquired in 1977. Milgo's Miami, Florida facility employed more than 2500 and also carried out world- wide manufacturing and marketing operations in many foreign countries. Monroe retired from Milgo in 1981. Monroe is survived by one daughter, Linda Overcash and her husband, Mike, of Salisbury; two sons, Monroe A. Miller, Jr. and Linda Lee, of Waynesville and Robert A. Miller, of Oriental; one granddaughter, Annette Moore; and two great-grandchildren, Katie and Sean Conger. The service will be private, attended by immediate family members.
