Monroe Phillips

"In Loving Memory"

Canton - Monroe Inman Phillips, 90, passed away on Saturday, February 24, 2018 at Charles George VA Medical Center.

A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was a son of the late James William and Azalea Pierce Phillips. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy Keener Phillips; two daughters, Susan Beth Mason and Janet Lynn Caldwell; five brothers; and one sister. Monroe was a United States Navy veteran having served during World War II. He was a member at Central United Methodist Church of Canton for over 70 years and retired from Champion International as an electrician supervisor with 38 years of service. Monroe was a life member of the American Legion Canton Post #61 and was also a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Pigeon River Masonic Lodge #386 AF&AM. He also enjoyed many rounds of golf with family and friends throughout his life.

He is survived by a son, William H. "Bill" Phillips (Gay) of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; one sister, Gladys Sutton (Bruce) of Canton; one brother, Bobby Phillips of Shreveport, Louisiana; three granddaughters, Jessica Tux Arrington (Mario) and Jasmine Arrington, all of Canton, and Natalie Hoffmann (Mark) of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; six great-grandchildren, Matilda mary - Elisabeth and Iris Marie Hoffmann, Marcus and Kobe Smith, Kiery Hardman, and Elijah Tux Arrington; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 27, 2018 in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Paul Brown officiating. Masonic rites will be observed at the service. Burial and military rites will follow at Bon-A-Venture Cemetery on Old Clyde Road. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
