Morris Jackson "Jack" Brooks, Sr., 94, passed away on Sunday, July 10, 2016. Jack was born in Waynesville, North Carolina on May 18, 1922 to Frederick Stonewall and Ruth Eleanor Morris Brooks. He was raised in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Jack served in the Army in Europe during World War II. During the first part of the war, Jack served in an Army band in California supporting the war bond effort, where he met Greta Garbo, Rita Heyworth, and other starlets. During the latter part of the War, Jack was a combat engineer in General George Patton's Army. Jack still carries a German Lugar bullet in his body. Upon his return he earned a degree in electrical engineering from the University of Tennessee. It was there that he met the love of his life, Betty Edith Noland. "Bet" was by his side for more than 65 happy years. As an electronic engineer, Jack worked for and retired from the U.S. Army Metrology and Calibrations Center on Redstone Arsenal. At the time of his retirement, Jack was the supervisor of its Calibrations Lab division. Jack loved to garden, fix anything that was broken, and watch Tennessee football and women's basketball. He could not drive past a lawnmower by the side of the road without stopping to pick it up to bring home and restore to working order. Jack wrote poetry about things and people he loved. He and Bet loved to travel, having been all over the world, and especially enjoyed cruising. Although a man of few words, he made every word count. He was known for his intelligence, integrity, keen wit and gentle nature. Jack was devoted to his family and is survived by his beloved wife, Betty Brooks; his daughter, Suzetta Jones and husband, Al; son Morris J. "Mo" Brooks, Jr. and wife, Martha, son Dr. Tim Brooks and wife, Rebecca; 10 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
