Myrtle Mehaffey

Waynesville-Myrtle Smith Mehaffey, age 91, of Waynesville, died Saturday, September 6, 2003 at Autumn Care Nursing Home.

She was a native and life long resident of Haywood County. She was the daughter of the late Ezekiel and Mary Etta McDaniel Smith.

She was the wife of the late William Alney Mehaffey, who died in 1985. She was also preceded in death by two sons, Paul W. and Doug Rhymer; one grandson, Paul William Rhymer, Jr.; ten brothers, Ceph, Frank, Hallett, Mark, Roy, David, Manley, Lucius, Perry, and Hardy Smith; and two sisters, Mary Tinsley and Maggie Reece.

She was a member of Richland Baptist Church. She loved to sew and loved her family very much.

She is survived by three daughters, Doris Fisher and her husband, Robert of Waynesville, Dorothy Rathbone and her husband, Frank of Clyde, and Ruth E. Bretana of Jacksonville, FL; one son, Carl Rhymer, Jr. of Greer, SC; one sister, Leila Rathbone of Maggie Valley; 25 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren and 11 great great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, September 7, 2003 at the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Homes. The Reverend Mike Leslie and Reverend Charles Robertson will officiate. Entombment will be at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park Mausoleum. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. Sunday, prior to the services, at the funeral home.

The pallbearers will be Brian Fisher, Patrick Rathbone, Eddie Mace, Daryl Fisher, Jeff Rathbone and Jimmy Hall.
